Poor bus driver - hit the cyclist and get charged by the police, maybe lose his job. Crash the bus avoiding the cyclist and injure some passengers and get charged by the police, lose his job. I remember a case in the UK where the bus driver stopped suddenly and the old lady who had got up to get off, was thrown down and actually died from the impact.
I was thinking about a camera, as cycling home, felt a car closing quickly behind. I assumed he was expecting me to head straight on down the path rather than stay on the road and follow the bend to the right, but i wanted to stay on the road, as it avoids the blind exit the other side coming out of the path (not that most exiting cyclists bother about it…), but I saw a car coming the other side of the road, so debated taking the path as the safe option, but thought, ‘why should i have to take preventative action because of some idiot’. Anyway, he pulled out to overtake me, saw the car, and couldn’t have missed my rear wheel by much when he had to pull back in. So turned round to look at him to say ‘WTF was that’. He overtook me, swerving in and out as he passed, tiny willy time, but then…pulled in to stop at a house a few yards further in on the right!!! Explain that one to me! So next time, yes, take the safe option, even if i don’t want to.
so he put my health at risk to save a few seconds at most (I didn’t stop to follow him into his house, as wasn’t in a mood for confrontation) but then, if i had a camera and took the footage to the police, do I believe they would actually do anything… So I shall buy a camera for the car in the amazon sale, but think i will leave the bike as is.
Pulling out without looking, a school kid did that the the kid in front of me on the commute on Wednesday. If she hadn’t stopped in time, nothing he could have done about it, but being Japan, no complaint from the person whose life would have taken a negative turn as a result of the other’s action. There was an article in the Japan Times this week about it, but I consistently fail to see how you can live in a country of 127 million and yet think you are the only one who exists in any given space at any given time. Next time, maybe I should just ask them the thought process that went through their head when they pulled out without looking.
On a separate note, when i was walking round the Imperial Palace on the way back from visiting the UK embassy, I did think it dangerous for pedestrians, runners and cyclists to be sharing the same space.
