Bernie, I had/have the same thing. I started a running regime in July 2016 and it involved a lot of hill running, then in late October I took at spill at rugby and landed fairly heavily on it. Sore hip just above the hip socket. Then in December I was doing sprints at rugby and the dull bearable pain suddenly got very sharp and I had trouble walking straight. Climbing stairs was especially painful. Dr Google confirmed Busitis (who new hills were really bad on joints?). So I stopped any activity and went through a few anti inflamitories each day and made sure to sleep on the non affected side. Rubbing with heat, warm baths and medicated bandages (the cooling kind) as well. The pain slowly went away Now I can't remember what the pain felt like even going up stairs and I started slow easy riding again last week. Did a nice brisk ride this morning with nary a twinge of the hip. As I write this I can't feel a thing. So, thanks for reading thus far, I would give it a good rest, icing and heat, sleep on the non affected side and give it a few weeks. I also did a few reverse leg extensions each day and will continue to do them. If at the end of February, they are still giving you pain ask your Doc about a shot. Good luck. others may have more sage advice.
