Yesterday I did a 125 km solo loop up the coast and around Mt. Yahiko.
Today my training partner and I bunked off work and did it together.
The radar looked okay but from meeting up at the 711, we found ourselves in a downpour.
By the coast is not so bad as sea buffers the temperature a bit.
We rode a nice tempo pace. Taking 5 minute pulls.
Just before Teradomari we actually hit a dry patch. Chance for a photo.
The clouds over Yahiko looked threatening. But I was optimistic and even stopped to oil the chain.
Round the back of Yahiko and we were in heavy rain. Warm up the pass. Freezing down the other side.
Our plan is to follow the Shinano River inland. I offer Yamada san an escape.
"Shall we follow the coast home?"
"Nah, we can't get any wetter than this!"
Can't get wetter. But can certainly get colder.
Our hands were soon too cold to function. I had to get off the bike to get some food out of my pockets.
Yamada san had taken his sunglasses off. Maybe a bad choice as the rain turned to hail.
A picture tells a story...
We pressed on. Still doing 5 minute pulls.
Over the bridge. Up and over a small pass with snow walls on each side.
Another cold descent.
But we are driven on as we get close to home.
A nice loop in bad conditions:
I would have aborted had it been solo. So grateful to have a likeminded nutter to ride with.
Once home, straight into the shower in my helmet and Sidis...
Rides like these!
